All summer, The Villages moved its Town Square music later in the evening to get away from the heat. From June 1 through September 30, nightly entertainment ran from 6 to 10 p.m. The official nightly entertainment page says the change was meant to "avoid the peak summer heat and weather delays while still delivering a full four hours of live entertainment each evening."
The new schedule began Sunday, Nov. 1, the same morning daylight saving time ended at 2 a.m. The bands now start an hour earlier at the same moment the sun started setting an hour earlier. In summer the later hour was there to avoid the heat and weather delays. Now the four-hour set starts just before dusk and mostly plays in the dark.
What moved on Nov. 1
Villages-News reported the change in late September:
As of Nov. 1, entertainment at all locations, including Eastport and Sawgrass Grove, will return to a 5 to 9 p.m. nightly schedule.
October was a split month. The four older squares ran 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 6 to 10 on Friday and Saturday, while Eastport stayed at 6 to 10 every night. Here is the October schedule next to the one that started Nov. 1, from the official seasonal hours page:
| Square | October music | Music since Nov. 1 | October happy hour | Happy hour since Nov. 1 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spanish Springs Town Square | Sun–Thu 5–9, Fri–Sat 6–10 | Nightly 5–9 | Sun–Thu 5–6, Fri–Sat 6–7 | Nightly 5–6 |
| Lake Sumter Landing Market Square | Sun–Thu 5–9, Fri–Sat 6–10 | Nightly 5–9 | Sun–Thu 5–6, Fri–Sat 6–7 | Nightly 5–6 |
| Brownwood Paddock Square | Sun–Thu 5–9, Fri–Sat 6–10 | Nightly 5–9 | Sun–Thu 5–6, Fri–Sat 6–7 | Nightly 5–6 |
| Eastport | Nightly 6–10 | Nightly 5–9 | Nightly 6–7 | Nightly 5–6 |
| Sawgrass Grove | Sun–Thu 5–9, Fri–Sat 6–10 | Nightly 5–9 | 3–5 | 3–5 |
Two groups of regulars see the biggest change. On Friday and Saturday at the three original squares, everything now happens an hour earlier, from the first song to happy hour to last call. At Eastport, every night moved up an hour, so the 10 p.m. finish that ran all of October is now 9 p.m.
Bar hours shifted with the music. Since Nov. 1, the bars at Spanish Springs, Lake Sumter Landing and Brownwood are open 4 to 9 p.m. every night. In October they stayed open until 10 on Friday and Saturday. The Eastport bar now opens at 2 p.m. and closes at 9, compared with 3 to 10 in October. Blondie's at Spanish Springs is open 2 to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 4 to 9 on Sunday.
Sunset now falls in the first hour
Sunset times show why the earlier start changes the feel of the evening. Here is when the sun sets in The Villages, according to timeanddate.com:
- Nov. 1: 5:42 p.m.
- Nov. 2: 5:41 p.m.
- Nov. 10: 5:36 p.m.
- Dec. 1: 5:29 p.m.
- Dec. 10: 5:30 p.m.
- Dec. 15: 5:32 p.m.
With music starting at 5 p.m., daylight lasts for the first 42 minutes of the set on Nov. 1 and only 29 minutes by Dec. 1. For the next three hours or more, the only light on the square is the stage and the string lights. Happy hour, now 5 to 6 p.m. every night at four of the five squares, runs right through sunset. Someone who gets there at 5 has a drink before dark, and someone who gets there at 6 has missed both happy hour and the sunset.
The squares also post a warning about lighting effects. The nightly entertainment page says, "Strobing and lighting will be used during scheduled entertainment that may not be suitable for individuals with conditions that include sensitivity to light." Those effects stand out more once the sky is dark, which is now most of every set.
Sawgrass Grove is the daytime square
Sawgrass Grove runs differently from the rest. Its music follows the same 5 to 9 p.m. schedule, but the seasonal hours page says its midday entertainment "will remain unchanged." Its happy hour is still 3 to 5 p.m., two hours ahead of the other four squares.
Since Nov. 1, Sawgrass Grove is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and 2:30 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. That means it now closes at 9 on Friday and Saturday too. In October it stayed open until 10 on both nights. Trivia Tuesday runs there from noon to 2 p.m. with free admission and no ticket. Since the other squares don't come alive until late afternoon, Sawgrass Grove is the one place where a happy hour drink and a free activity both happen in full daylight.
The opening week on the bandstands
The bands booked for the first nights of the new schedule show how each square fills its 5 to 9 p.m. slot. The official calendar listed these acts, and its listings note that all events and performances are subject to change:
- Spanish Springs Town Square: Steve Hogie Band on Nov. 1, Steve Cardwell & The Neon Drifters on Nov. 2, Old Skool on Nov. 3
- Lake Sumter Landing Market Square: Dance Express on Nov. 1, The Rundown Band on Nov. 2
- Brownwood Paddock Square: 40 Years 2 Late on Nov. 1, Justin Heet Band on Nov. 2, Gravity Parade on Nov. 3
- Eastport: Hacksaw Hamlin on Nov. 1, Anita Drink Band on Nov. 2, Earth Beat on Nov. 3
- Sawgrass Grove: Alex Hayes Band on Nov. 1, Boozy Bingo on Nov. 2, Jeff Whitfield Trio on Nov. 3
Each square also posts a 2026 Happenings guide with its full lineup: Spanish Springs, Lake Sumter Landing, Brownwood, Sawgrass Grove and Eastport.
December's big nights happen after dark
The December calendar fits these darker evenings. The evening events below all fall inside the 5 to 9 p.m. window or start after sunset, and the craft fair on the list wraps up just before dark.
- Tuesday, Dec. 1: Light Up The Villages. The developer calls this its "first ever community-wide tree lighting," held at all Town Squares on the same evening from 5 to 9 p.m. The ceremony starts at 6:30 p.m., about an hour after the 5:29 sunset, so the trees light up in full darkness. The announcement on thevillages.com promises holiday music and "special guests of honor." The seasonal events listing adds that "each square brings its own unique holiday flare."
- Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 12 and 13: Holly Jolly Arts & Crafts Festival. Lake Sumter Landing Market Square hosts handmade goods from local artisans, food trucks and live entertainment from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. The festival closes at 5 p.m., the same time the nightly 5 to 9 p.m. music schedule begins, about half an hour before sunset.
- Saturday, Dec. 19: Neon Night. From 5 to 9 p.m., three squares host a dance night and ask guests to wear neon and light-up accessories. CLUB CTRL featuring DJ Lu-S plays Eastport, 40 Years 2 Late plays Brownwood, and Rocky and The Rollers play Spanish Springs, according to the Neon Night announcement.
- Tuesday, Dec. 22: Celtic Angels Christmas. This ticketed show at Savannah Center starts at 7 p.m. The performers include Victoria Sexton, Aoife Barrett, Jessica Hayes, Maryann Lynch, Myn Fitzpatrick, The Celtic Knights and the Trinity Ensemble, per The Villages Entertainment.
Light Up The Villages goes back to Tuesday-evening hours, but Neon Night shows the biggest change. In October, a Saturday night on the squares ran 6 to 10. Neon Night runs 5 to 9, the same as every other night this winter, with sunset around 5:30.
Planning around the 5 p.m. start
On the new schedule, the arrival time decides what kind of evening you get. Arriving by 5 gets you happy hour, the first songs in daylight and sunset during the opening set. Arriving at 6:30 on Dec. 1 puts you on the square right as the tree lights come on. On Friday or Saturday, any plan built around a 10 p.m. finish needs to move up an hour, and that includes Eastport. Sawgrass Grove keeps the earliest hours of the five, with a 3 p.m. happy hour and midday entertainment that did not change.
The Light Up announcement says more holiday details are coming and points readers to Vmail for updates. The seasonal hours page is the place to check bar and happy hour times before you head out.
